What to expect

Some days show you one side of Bali. This one shows you five. It starts with drums and masks, wanders through a sacred jungle full of monkeys, climbs to the rim of an active volcano for lunch, and ends with the sound of spring water at one of the island's holiest temples.

Morning: myth and jungle. After hotel pickup, take your seat for the Barong and Keris dance, a lively gamelan-driven story of the eternal fight between good and evil. Then step into the shade of Ubud Monkey Forest, where long-tailed macaques roam between moss-covered temples and giant banyan trees.

Midday: volcano views. The road climbs into the cool highlands to the Mount Batur viewpoint. Take in the black lava fields and the shimmering crater lake, then sit down to an Indonesian lunch with the volcano right in front of your table.

Afternoon: rice and holy water. On the way back down, stop at Tegallalang Rice Terrace to walk the curving green steps shaped by centuries of the subak water system. Your last stop is Tirta Empul Temple, where Balinese families bathe beneath carved spouts in a centuries-old purification ritual. Watch quietly, or join in with a sarong.

Your private driver handles the roads, timing and parking all day, so all you need to do is enjoy it.
